Planning for sleep training is important (that’s why we offer two different kinds of sleep plans, after all!), and deciding when and how to start sleep training is a key part of creating a solid sleep training plan.
But here’s a “when and how” question that is often overlooked: what is the best day of the week to start sleep training?
Read on for answers!
QUICK TIP: Best Day Of The Week To Start Sleep Training?
As with so many things, the answer to this depends largely on unique factors. Remember, we don’t advocate a one-size-fits-all approach to sleep training! So choosing a day to start will depend greatly on your family’s schedule.
That said, here are a few pointers that many of our sleep consultation clients have found helpful:
- If you and/or your partner work and have a traditional 9-5, Monday-Friday schedule, then it is usually a good idea to start sleep training on Friday night, with bedtime. This gives you two days over the weekend to be tired and distracted with sleep training. 😉
- If you and/or your partner work and have shift schedules that change from week to week, focus less on selecting a day of the week to start and more on choosing a window of time during which at least one of you will have a day or two off from work.
- If you are a stay-at-home parent, the day of the week may be less important, as you may have a more flexible schedule that’ll allow you to sleep in and nap, in order to make up for lost sleep. However, it can be a good idea to choose a time during which your partner or spouse will be home. That may mean starting on Friday, or the day before before your partner’s day off.
- If you are a single, working parent, start sleep training right before your day(s) off. We also recommend trying to line up some additional help, so that you don’t become overly exhausted during the sleep training process.
Remember, regardless of the day of the week during which you start sleep training, make sure to begin during a time in which you will be home for at least a few weeks, and during which everything will be as normal as possible, schedule-wise. Avoid starting sleep training right before a vacation or a major life change (like moving to a new house or the birth of a new baby).
