Are you getting enough sleep? Chances are that if you are a new parent, the answer is probably no. However, consistently not getting enough sleep, or getting poor quality sleep, isn’t just bad for your health but could impact how you parent too. A study by the University of Illinois reveals the crucial role sleep has in parenting and explores the relationship between sleep and ‘permissive parenting’, the tendency to be inconsistent with discipline and set few guidelines and rules.
Prioritize sleep to become a better parent
The University of Illinois researchers studied the sleep patterns of 234 mothers and discovered that those moms who slept well and for longer, were less likely to have a permissive parenting style compared to those mothers who didn’t get enough sleep. Parents who get less quality sleep can often become more irritable, experience impaired attention or simply so exhausted they are less consistent with their parenting style.
Looking after yourself in the early days
It’s not surprising that many new parents become incredibly exhausted. After all, a lot of responsibility comes with being a new parent. You also need to work out a routine, constantly worrying about whether you are doing everything right and all the million things to do now the baby has arrived. But feeling stressed and exhausted doesn’t have to go hand in hand with new parenthood. There are many ways you can relax, unwind and even sleep better, especially in those crucial early days.
Use lavender essential oil to help rest
Many parents say that until their first child arrived, they had no idea of what being exhausted truthfully felt like. If that sounds like you then you may have already been wondering whether you will ever sleep again. Once your baby has finally gone to sleep, use lavender essential oil to help relax you and feel a sense of peace and calm to help you get a good night’s sleep. Just put some directly on to your pillow or just add a few drops to your diffuser. Lavender can even be added to your bath for a relaxing soak or perhaps ask your partner to massage your back and shoulders with lavender massage oil. However you choose to use it, you will find yourself sleeping soundly in no time.
There’s no doubt that while becoming a new parent may be exhausting, it can be a hugely rewarding and wonderful experience. It’s important for all new parents to remember to take care of themselves too, as well as their new baby. Essential oils have huge benefits for new parents, whether you want to relax and unwind or re-energize your mind and body. Just make sure you take care when using them around babies and infants.
