Why bother with white noise? Because the benefits can be big. And white noise is not just for your baby – it can help you sleep better, too!
White noise helps block out background sounds that may wake you or your baby from sleep, and that can translate into deeper nighttime sleep and longer naps. What’s more, certain white noise sounds (like the sound of rain, for instance) have a calming, relaxing effect on you and your baby. In fact, as I type this article, I have the Simply Noise website open, and I am listening to a virtual rain shower. So soothing!
When it comes to incorporating white noise into your baby’s nap time and bedtime routines, you have options for how to do so. You can invest in a white noise machine, or download white noise apps or MP3’s.
White Noise Machines and Apps for Your Baby (and You!)
The Marpac Dohm-DS Dual Speed Sound Conditioner is one of the best white noise machines on the market, and it is worth the investment. The Dohm-DS is heavy-duty, meaning it will still be going strong years after you buy it. And in addition to being the top-selling sound machine on Amazon, it’s the official sound machine of the National Sleep Foundation!
The Dohm DS is excellent, but it isn’t portable, meaning it cannot be used in the car, or in the stroller. However, the Cloud b Sleep Sheep can! And it is soft and cuddly, to boot. This fluffy little sheep has a small sound machine sewn inside; simply insert two AA batteries, and voila! You have a portable (and adorable) sound machine that your little one can hold on car trips, or while traveling in the stroller.
One of our favorite white noise products? The Baby Shusher! Designed especially for young babies, the Baby Shusher soothes babies using a rhythmic shushing sound. It comes with an adjustable volume control, as well as a built-in timer. It’s portable, too, making it a good choice for on-the-go soothing.
Of course, sound-generating machines are not your only white noise options. Thanks to our smartphones, we have an array of white noise apps to choose from, too! Apps are obviously much lower in cost than sound machines, and they have the added bonus of being highly portable (since we moms and dads tend to carry our phones with us everywhere, don’t we? ) The White Noise app is the most popular in the App Store and comes very highly rated. The company offers both a ‘lite’ version (which is free) as well as a paid version (which is still quite inexpensive.) Android versions are also available – both the lite version and the paid version.
Baby Shusher also has a free white noise app available for iPhones. To see the app in action, check out the video below:
