My daughter just hit the 4 month mark last week. She has always been a terrible napper (30 minutes unless she’s sleeping on me) but sleeps well at night. Around 11 weeks she starting sleeping through the night 7-7 with no wake ups. She’s been putting herself to sleep since around then as well. A few weeks ago she started waking up once a night screaming. We’d give her a bottle and she’d go back to sleep. She’s now waking up one to two times a night (usually between 2-4am and then again at 5:30. Sometimes there’s a 12am wakeup too). She’s not typically looking to play when she wakes up but not screaming either, just awake and looking for food. It seems giving her a bottle is the only thing that settles her and she goes back to sleep but I’m worried I’m just creating bad habits as part of the potential 4 month sleep regression vs actually feeding a hungry child. I don’t want to deprive her of food if she’s actually hungry though. Is this the sleep regression? Not sure if we’re doing the right thing. Appreciate your help!

Hi @Angela – Thanks for writing, and sorry that your little one has started waking more at night! We’d really need a full sleep history and maybe some sleep logs to figure out if she is waking from hunger or habit! Since you are feeding her now anyway, a first step would be to be sure that when you do feed her in the night, that she goes back to bed/sleep while still awake, so that she can drift off on her own, In this way, she’s eating, but also learning the skills to fall back to sleep on her own, and not “needing” to feed back to sleep. Hopefully things smooth out quickly, but if you do want one on one help, we’re here! Good luck!
